The Illinois Department of the American Legion
2009 Scholarship Program
Each year the Department of Illinois awards 25-$1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors. There are 4 awards given in each of the 5 Divisions for accredited colleges and universities, and 1 award given for a student entering a trade/vocational school (a non-degree program). The only stipulation being that the student be a direct descendent of a Legionnaire (living or deceased-Great-Grandparent through parent-mothers included). Participation in the program has experienced a downward trend in the past several years. Applications have been so slow that 1 in 4 had a good chance obtaining a scholarship. This just means if you qualify and apply you have a good chance of earning one of these scholarships from the 2nd Division, of which Post 43 is part of.
So how do you get more information? The easiest way is to go to www.illegion.org and you get all the necessary information and easily print the application at home.
You can also contact Wayne Fischer @ 630-961-0628 for additional information.
Keep in mind that all applications must be signed by the qualifying Legion family member. Post Commander James Godshall must sign the application if the qualifying family member is deceased.
Finally all applications must be in to Department Headquarters no later than March 15th.
No Exceptions will be allowed.
We encourage all members that have children or grandchildren to apply. It has been several years since we have had someone connected to Post 43 earn an award of $1,000. The Department of Illinois of the American Legion is proud to offer these scholarships to deserving Legion family members. Be sure you spread the word on this super program.
